Evaluation of Unit 43

Production process: In this unit we have been producing a tv show called the Games Corner for Sheffield Live. I was part of the editing, filming and set design teams. So my job was to take part in editing the footage as well as filming and designing the set. Pre production involved planning what we were going to film, for example making story boards to show the positioning and camera angles. This also involved making sure we had a script so there was a plan of what the presenters would say on set.  We also made a plan for the location, budget and risk assesment. The production simply just involved doing everything we planned to do in the pre production and film efficiently. The post production involved editing and sorting out minor problems and how we can fix them to maximum standards, we had problems such as glare, blurriness, colour problems, muffled sound.

Key Decisions: For our location we used Studio 1 which was decorated with posters which were gaming related to target the audience who would watch the show. Due to where the posters are we had to do a straight on shot to get both presenters in as well as the posters. We also had to decide how many cameras we would need to film, and where we would put the artificial lighting as it was a dark day and not much natural light. We ended up using 3 cameras with the main one in the middle for the straight on shot and the other ones at either side to get a separate shot of each of the presenters. We also had to decide on if we would need a script for the presenters to read off and the most suitable sound equipment needed. We started using a rode boom pole to record the sound of the footage, but the quality ended up sounding bad so we used lapel mics to pick up the presenters sound more clearly.

Storyboard and scripting: We pretty much stuck to our storyboard plan, we also did with our script also.

Quality: Visual quality and framing wasn't a problem for us, we had no camera issues and got all our footage done for one episode in a day of filming. The problem we did have was that when the editing the sound of the news segment we could not adjust it to stay in the show and decided it wouldn't be able to feature on our show. Our edit log was good and had no problems with saving.

Comparison: Comparing our original script to what we used, it was pretty much the same. The same with the storyboards. We managed to use the ideas from the whole team and we followed the conventions of a magazine show.

Appropriate for Pre - Or post - Watershed: As the show is aired at 8.30, we had to make sure the content of it was appropriate and didn't offend anyone and was suitable for all ages.

Improvements: To improve our show we could change our set to make it better, and we could also do with help from our sponsors.
